Vaguely Caricature-ish Sketches: The Fourth

I've been busy recently creating a pitch image for something over on The Silent Knights, which should be posted on Friday.

However I have managed to slip in a bit of personal drawing. I've been practising caricaturing the Voyager cast, which I'm really enjoying at the moment - but as I'm not really happy with that yet, I'll post some random faces I've done:

I'm really happy with how 9 & 10 have turned out, but I've got to practice style consistency. While it is good to be able to do many different styles, it's much better to be able to do them purposefully, and with intent.

9's lips took me the longest time, but I think I finally nailed them. It didn't matter which part I drew first, it would look awful. No matter what angle I approached it from, it either looked nothing like the picture, or it ruined the picture. Because of this, I've realised a weakness of mine: When drawing, I want the image to look good at every stage, to be able to stand up on it's own, and sometimes you just can't do it that way.

Out of all the professionals I've watched making art, all of their art looked strange and terrible during the process, but they all fall together at the end - and look all the better for it. I'm going to have to practice just having faith and patience. Once I let myself forget about how the lips were looking, before I knew it, they were done and - I reckon - look great.

  4. Your artwork is only getting better! You got skillz, yo.

    2, 4 and 10 are my favourites. Here's why!

2 really inspires a personality for me. I just look at him and go "I could write him". Not slow and stupid, but not a genius either. A bartender. I wanna write an exercise about him now!

4 has phenomenal shading, the best I think I've ever seen you do! How'd you DO that?! Also, he's a pimp... pimps are awesome in concept.

10 is a really personality heavy character too. I love it. Again, I could write that. Awesome teeth and eyes. I swear you get better with each round of sketching.

Two things I want from you. Firstly, I wanna know where those three heads I mention were taken from. Secondly, I wanna see you post some human body sketches. You know, hands, feet, anatomy and poses.

  5. 1: I think I got those particular faces from a series of galleries eBaums world ran a long time ago called 'The Losers of Myspace' - I think you can still google it.

I'm not usually a big fan of eBaums world, but this time it served my purpose well - namely people they would have called 'losers' are the people with the most interesting faces.

eBaums world also has galleries of Mugshots, which work equally as well.

    2: That I shall
