I decided to use #11, #6 and #17, though I may still use some of the others for something. This is what I ended up with:
"The future of dreams, is the hope of the faint hearted - but persistance is the food of children. How true that is."

I like all the monk heads (although 10 is hideous). 5 would be my fave but I like the choices you made for your still!
ReplyDeleteIncredible. The background is tasty as well. I'm very inspired.
You could design characters forever, man.
ReplyDelete*shakes fist at the industry* Why isn't he inside you?!
Eurgh. I retract that.
Poor choice of words Luke. When I hear the word monk I usually think of martial artists rather than missionaries, and whilst these character designs are sound, I have to ask, which monk is the serious one? :D
ReplyDeleteHaha, thank you for retracting that Luke.

I guess I could have referred to them as Anchorites or something, but I think St Anthony the Great would have been absolutely baffled at what we class as a Monk today.
An ass-kicking hand to hand specialist is about as faraway as you can get from the pacifistic and spiritual removal from all outside distractions for the purposes of prayer. I always found that hilarious.
It kind of smacks of Hollywood - You know, like re-casting Joan of Arc as a man with a chainsaw... which is actually a pretty good idea.
I saw an ad for a Roman Era RTS, which featured pictures of three infantrymen - two of which were bikini clad girl 'warriors'. If you tried to explain that to the actual, exclusively male, Roman army they'd laugh in your face.
In the future I can imagine designing Roman soldiers and someone saying "You confused me when you said Roman, because all of these drawings are of men."
You know, after all that, my favoured class in Nethack actually is the ass-kicking Monk.

I guess the designs all had to be a little silly, but the one on the left is the serious one. For some reason I chose a screen shot at one of the few points where he's smiling. Doh!
Unless they are Shaolin monks, in which case you get the best of both worlds.
ReplyDeleteGreat sketches in all. Lots of character.
ReplyDeleteIf they weren't monks...
Number 4 could make a good villain. Or a bad villain at that. A monk turned bad ninja?
14 could be the tag along sad giant character.
5 could make a great scrooge.
8 could make an obliviously clumsy male model rambo? maybe
12 seems like a tenor singing fruit merchant.
& 9 seems very wise and noble.

Dear Helmutlord, this is ashellessmind from Deviantart, except four years later.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember me?
My best to you and your multi-religional monks.
